Dreamliner in the air

Thomson, the first UK airline to fly the revolutionary Dreamliner, has revealed the name of the fourth 787 aircraft to join its fleet as “Angel of the Sky”, which was chosen by listeners of Metro Radio’s Steve and Karen Breakfast show in the North East of England.

Thomson, the first UK airline to fly the revolutionary Dreamliner, revealed the name of the fourth 787 aircraft to join its fleet as “Angel of the Sky”, which was chosen by listeners of Metro Radio’s Steve and Karen Breakfast show.

Thomson, which will launch Dreamliner flights from Newcastle International Airport to Cancun and Florida next year, received over 3,000 plane name suggestions from Metro listeners around Newcastle and the North East following a week long call for entries.

The competition judging panel included Metro Radio’s Steve & Karen and Thomson Airways Managing Director, Chris Browne and Customer Service Director, Carl Gissing. Lucky listener Danielle Moore of Jarrow, Tyne and Wear, suggested “Angel of the Sky” which will be painted onto the state-of-the-art new airliner, before she jets off on luxury holiday to Orlando, Florida, USA on the 787.

The Dreamliner is set to revolutionise air travel and leave holidaymakers more relaxed and refreshed than ever before, with comfort and wellbeing features on-board reducing the effects of jet-lag. It can also fly much further distances than similar-sized aircraft and is more environmentally friendly, using 20% less fuel.

Carl Gissing, Director of Customer Services for Thomson Airways, explains the choice of new name. He said: “We wanted to celebrate our new Dreamliner flying from Newcastle International Airport, to Mexico and Florida next year, so teamed up with Steve & Karen to give listeners the chance to name our fourth Dreamliner.

“We have been blown away by the fantastic response to the name our plane competition, receiving some brilliant suggestions and we think ‘Angel of the Sky’ is a perfect fit. We liked the link to the unique Angel of the North, which is of course symbolic of the North East. The Dreamliner is also symbolic for Thomson Airways, and is part of our modernisation strategy to bring unique holidays to our customers. We are committed to giving customers around the UK access to flying on the Dreamliner and can’t wait to begin flying it from Newcastle International Airport next year.”

Metro Radio’s Steve said: “I saw the plane for the first time when it was up in the region a few weeks ago. We knew when we were asked to get involved in naming it that we could have some good fun on air with our listeners. Most of the suggestions we had were brilliant and we couldn’t believe how many thousands we received!”

Metro Radio’s Karen added: “There was one clear winner; ‘Angel of the Sky’ was so right for this impressive new plane flying out of Newcastle. We’ll be getting our paint brushes out soon and doing our best sign writing work to badge the Dreamliner up.”

The Thomson 787 Dreamliner will carry 291 passengers. Premium Club will seat 47 in a 2-3-2 configuration, each with a 38” pitch, and Economy Club will seat 244 in a 3-3-3 configuration, each with an industry leading 33” or 34” pitch. Bigger Seats in Economy Club mean you’ll get a 33” or 34” seat pitch. Upgrade to Premium Club and you’ll get 38”, which means plenty of room to stretch out. Customers can also plug their iPod, iPhone or tablet into the state-of-the-art seatback TVs on the Dreamliner to listen to music, watch TV and films or view pictures from their holiday.

The brand new aircraft named Angel of the Sky (registration G-TUID) is the fourth Boeing 787 Dreamliner to join the Thomson Airways fleet. Thomson became the first UK airline to take delivery of the aircraft and was the first UK airline to fly the Dreamliner. It will be taking delivery of eight Boeing 787 Dreamliners in total, up to May 2015.
