Travelling teddies get boarding cards in global first

Thomson Airways is giving youngsters the chance to ‘check-in’ their teddies before jetting off on holiday, in a bid to reduce the number of cuddly companions lost in the UK’s airports.
We know how attached our young customers are to their teddies and the thought of not having them with them on holiday can be upsetting.
Gatwick airport’s lost property department sees as many as 30 much loved but lost toys handed into them each month. That’s hundreds of heart broken children heading off on their holidays without their favourite toy each year.
From today, kids travelling with Thomson Airways from all UK airports to Thomson Family Resorts, First Choice Holiday Villages and First Choice Splash World properties in locations such as Spain, Mexico, Greece and Florida will have the opportunity to ‘check-in’ their teddies. They will also be given a special boarding card which they can exchange for a Very Important Buddy (VIB) tag at the boarding gate.
We hope that the Very Important Buddy scheme will help children and parents alike take more notice of where teddies are during the wait in the airport - ensuring that owners and teddies are both safely in the air and on their way to their holiday destination.
At Gatwick airport today, six year old Zoe, and her two year old brother Jack, received boarding cards for their teddies, ‘Ruffy the dog’ and ‘Teddy’. Their mum, Joanna, who is taking her family on holiday to Antalya in Turkey today, said of the scheme:
“I think this scheme is an excellent idea as Zoe never goes anywhere without Ruffy. I shudder at the thought of her losing him – especially just before going away on holiday!”
Carl Gissing, Director of Customer Service for Thomson Airways, said:
“As a family friendly tour operator, we like to make a fuss of children travelling on our holidays, both in resort and on their flight, and we are always looking for new ways to enhance our customers’ holiday experiences. We know that kids will love checking their toys in and taking home the VIB tag as a souvenir!”
